Video: top trends in journalism in 2011
The New Year is here and that means it’s time to look ahead at some of the big trends in journalism in the 12 months ahead!
This year I’ve brought in some of the brightest young minds in journalism today, including Alex Wood, Tracy Boyer, Patrick Smith and Philip John for their suggestions – and the 11th prediction this year has been suggested by one of you guys!
Enjoy – and if you think I’ve missed anything good out, or got something completely wrong, then the comments box is right downstairs.
Happy New Year!

Very well done, Adam! The predictions are strong and varied so I think you’ll have better luck this year. The video is also super fun to watch with the fast tempo and graphics – already looking forward to next year’s video! Thanks so much for letting me be a part of it.

thanks, those are some keen observations.
more video and data – yes!! let’s make that happen.
also like the presentation with kinetic type.
I actually don’t think that your 2010 prediction “the year of the hyperlocal” was wrong – at least not in the U.S., where you had lots of movement and growing awareness of that market.
[…] the season for predictions, and I was lucky enough to be mentioned in Adam Westbrook’s fab video ‘Top Trends in Journalism 2011’. So I thought I would take a moment to expand my prediction that 2011 will see NGOs will become […]
Brilliant video Adam! Your ideas always inspire me to do something new. I recently bought my video camera so I’m hoping to fulfill your number 1 and 5 predictions out here in Hong Kong!
This is some great content, Adam. I predict in 2011 people like you will force me to finally learn to do advanced video production. This looks great! Keep it up 🙂
Hey everyone thanks for the lovely comments!
@Jessica: good point re US hyperlocal; it hasn’t been a bad year for hyperlocals here either, but not quite ‘the year of’ I had rather dramatically predicted 🙂
@Miki & @Ellie: yes – get out there and make some video, stat!
Here’s my take on those predictions:
1. Agree
2. Not sure
3. Definitely
4. Not really – I see more journalists doing data in 2011 but I think data innovation will be more limited.
5. This is a development that I would like to see but I think it’s going to be more gradual
6. No unless Phil has something up his sleeve!
7. Yes – the Kindle’s popularity has surprised me.
8. Not sure.
9. Yes definitely. It’s really an extension of what happened in 2010
10. Tentatively – yes.
11. Yes – will be interested in seeing what happens with this.
My prediction – more social media sites will follow Ning and ScribbleLive and go for a subs based model in 2011.
